Sanderson Stuns in True West

TPA is fortunate to have a working, serious actor teaching drama to its 6th, 11th, and 12th grade students.  Last night I was privileged to see Mr. Sanderson, who comes to us from the Chicago theater scene,  in his Arizona acting debut as Austin in True West.

The play is American playwright Sam Shepard's intense, Tony award-winning story of two estranged brother's rivalry and conflict when the wayward one suddenly reappears after years of isolation in the desert.  The production I saw last night was set in Hollywood, with allusions to Palm Springs and the Arizona desert.

The play explores the question, "Is the true, old American west and its conflict between the outlaw and the lawman really dead?  Or does it survive, deeply embedded in the American soul?"  Echoing the story of Cain and Abel, the play gradually reaches a mighty, surprising climax.

Parent's advisory: the script includes rough language and drinking and this production featured some pretty convincing theatrical violence. 

Members of the TPA community who love the theater, or who simply want to experience live theater at its thought-provoking, disturbing best are urged to see Mr. Sanderson and his fellow actors.

Produced by Class 6 Theatre the show runs until January 19 at the Mesa Arts Center's intimate Farnsworth Studio Theatre.    Tickets were still available at press time.
